Janu Basti — Knee Therapy in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
Janu Basti is a soothing, targeted therapy for knee pain and stiffness. At Ayurvedam, Bhopal, warm medicated oil is pooled over the knee to nourish the joint and relieve pain — naturally.
Janu Basti is one of the most effective and classical external Panchakarma therapies in Ayurveda for chronic knee conditions. The Sanskrit word Janu means "knee joint" and Basti means "to retain or pool". At Ayurvedam Charak Panchakarma Kendra on Kolar Road, Bhopal, warm medicated herbal oil is pooled over the knee joint within a dough reservoir to nourish the cartilage, restore synovial fluid (joint lubrication), and ease painful stiffness naturally.
What is Janu Basti & How Does It Work?
In Ayurveda, knee pain and osteoarthritis are classified under Sandhigata Vata — a condition where aggravated Vata dosha causes dry, rough, and degenerative changes in the joints, leading to cartilage wear, reduced joint fluid, and friction during movement. Janu Basti provides deep, sustained warmth and nourishment directly to the affected tissues, pacifying Vata and supporting natural joint rejuvenation.
What to Expect — Step-by-Step Procedure
- Individual Assessment: Dr. Dhiraj Choudhary (B.A.M.S.) examines the knee joint to select the right classical medicated oil (such as Mahanarayan Taila, Ksheerabala Taila, or Sahacharadi Taila) based on your constitution and condition severity.
- Dough Reservoir Preparation: A leak-proof circular ring or reservoir is prepared using freshly kneaded black gram (Masha) dough and carefully sealed around the knee joint.
- Continuous Warm Oil Pooling: Lukewarm medicated oil is gently poured into the dough ring. The oil is retained for 30 to 45 minutes, with temperature continuously maintained by replacing cooler oil with freshly warmed oil.
- Deep Tissue Absorption: The warm herbal oils penetrate through the skin, joint capsule, patellar tendon, and ligaments, nourishing the joint tissues and reducing local inflammation.
- Post-Therapy Massage & Swedana: After carefully removing the oil and dough, a gentle restorative massage is performed followed by mild herbal steam fomentation (Nadi Sweda) to further ease stiffness.
